“This is not philanthropy, […] it’s rent for us living on the planet.”

- Yvon Chouinard, Founder of Patagonia and Co-founder of 1% for the Planet

Goodee is a proud member of 1% for the Planet. We’re excited to be part of a global network of inspiring companies who are coming together to give back to the Earth.

What is 1% for the Planet?

1% for the Planet is a global movement launched in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. Realizing they had a responsibility to protect the planet, the outdoor-loving entrepreneurs decided to give 1% of their sales back to the environment, whether or not they were profitable.

As they both recognized the power of collective action, they founded 1% for the Planet as a non-profit organization to encourage other businesses to do the same. When joining the movement, businesses also commit to donating 1% of their annual revenue to grassroots environmental nonprofits making a difference on the ground through monetary donations, volunteer time, in-kind donations, or other forms of approved promotional support.

Why is it important to us?

As a Certified B Corp working for social and environmental good, we were determined to deepen our commitment to a more sustainable future, so joining 1% for the Planet made perfect sense. By supporting 1%-for-the-Planet-approved nonprofit partners, we have a unique opportunity to build meaningful relations with grassroots organizations at the forefront of social and environmental justice, and have a greater impact.

What nonprofits do we support?

After reviewing 1% for the-Planet’s list of pre-vetted nonprofits, we’ve identified four environmental organizations with a specific focus on BIPOC communities that we want to support.

We will be donating 1% of our Fiscal Year 2020 proceeds to our nonprofit partners. And the best part is, as our business grows — with your support — so will our impact.

What does it mean for you?

As a conscious consumer, you can have peace of mind knowing that you’re taking action for our planet every time you make a purchase with us. We can’t make meaningful change alone, but together we can make a difference for the Earth*.

The Ron Finley Project
undefined

When L.A.-based fashion designer Ron Finley got tired of the lack of fresh produce in his neighborhood, he decided to grow a curbside edible garden in front of his South Central home — an act that city officials deemed illegal. The “Gangsta Gardener” fought back, got the law changed, and eventually launched a nonprofit to teach people how to turn unused spaces into community gardens.

Why we love The Ron Finley Project

The organization helps create a healthier and more sustainable local community by empowering residents to grow their own organic food, effectively bringing urban gardening not only to South L.A. but to the world. We’re thrilled to partner up with them for a second year running.

Sunrise Movement

In 2017, eight young graduates fresh out of university launched Sunrise to mobilize young people to fight for climate reforms and put climate change on the US government’s national agenda. The group has since established itself as a powerful movement, with hundreds of hubs nationwide using rallies, sit-ins, and voter outreach to pressure politicians to take more active stances on climate issues and support police and immigration reform.

Why we love Sunrise Movement

Sunrise has played an instrumental role in shifting the nation’s conversation on climate. The movement believes in the value of collaboration and unity to advance solutions to the global environmental crisis, and brings joy and optimism to the fight.

Harlem Grown

A successful entrepreneur whose business took a hard hit during the Great Recession, Tony Hillery started Harlem Grown after volunteering at an underfunded New York City school in Harlem where he witnessed the students’ lack of healthy food options. With their help, Hillery turned a vacant lot into a functional farm to teach them how to grow food and cook healthy meals using the fruits of their labor.

Why we love Harlem Grown

In addition to providing hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition to low-income youth, Harlem Grown further enriches their lives through mentoring and exposure to higher education and meaningful career paths — it opens up a world of opportunity.

Why we love Earth Guardians

With a mission to build a healthy, equitable, and sustainable world, Earth Guardians empowers young people to be active climate and social justice leaders in their communities, while encouraging deep listening, connecting with nature, and honoring diversity.
