Environmental Sustainability
Trucking with Zero Emissions
NFI Logistics operates the largest zero-emission drayage fleet in the United States and is on track to become the first to achieve a 100% zero-emission drayage fleet. By the end of 2024, NFI aims to have 100 zero-emission electric trucks in operation.
They are also developing one of the largest networks of commercial fleet chargers nationwide, including 50 high-capacity DC (direct current) fast chargers, to support their electric trucks. Additionally, NFI is building the country’s first heavy-duty electric vehicle maintenance shop, staffed with high-voltage trained technicians to ensure proper maintenance and support for these advanced vehicles.

For their non-electric trucks, NFI is transitioning from traditional diesel to biodiesel, a renewable fuel made from organic materials such as vegetable oils or animal fats. Biodiesel is used primarily for long-haul trips, while electric trucks are deployed for shorter distances to maximize environmental benefits.
Harnessing Solar Power
NFI Logistics harnesses solar energy to power both their trucks and warehouse operations. To date, the company has installed 8 megawatts (MW) of solar power systems on its warehouse roofs. This solar energy infrastructure is capable of generating 2.4 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of zero-emission energy annually, supplemented by 5 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy storage. They are currently working on increasing their energy storage capacity.

Innovating Warehouse Operations
In their warehouses, NFI is transitioning to electric equipment to further reduce emissions. They are replacing propane-powered equipment with lithium battery-powered forklifts for material handling. Lithium battery-powered equipment produces zero emissions during operation, whereas propane-powered equipment emits greenhouse gasses and other pollutants. Additionally, NFI has implemented robotic stretch wrapping technology to securely wrap and package palletized goods more efficiently, which significantly reduces film waste compared to manual wrapping methods.
The adoption of this technology has reduced plastic waste at NFI by up to 50%.
NFI Logistics is also dedicated to effective recycling practices. Each year across all of their operations, the company recycles over 250,000 pallets, 21.5 tons of plastic, and 1,600 tons of cardboard.
Building for a Sustainable Future
NFI ensures that all new buildings they construct meet LEED standards. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a globally recognized certification system for green buildings developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED certification signifies that a building meets rigorous standards for sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental impact.
Social Sustainability
While NFI has a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, the company also places equal importance on fostering a socially responsible workplace, ensuring that its impact extends beyond the planet to the people and communities it serves.
In 2022, NFI's CEO, Sid Brown, along with other executive leaders, joined over 2,000 CEOs across the US in signing the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion pledge. This pledge emphasizes NFI's dedication to creating an inclusive organization for its people, customers, and the communities it serves. You can read more about the pledge here.
“At NFI, we believe creating a truly inclusive workplace is the right thing to do and is essential to our success. By working together to create an inclusive environment, we can unlock the full potential of our diverse workforce and achieve our collective goals.”

Uplifting Women in the Workplace
NFI Logistics also stands out for its dedication to fostering gender equity within the workplace. NFI has been recognized by the Women In Trucking Association as among the top companies for women to work for in transportation. They have also been recognized by Forbes as a top employer for women in 2022, a significant achievement they have now received for three consecutive years.
Women in Leadership
One of NFI’s standout initiatives is their annual "Women in Leadership" (WIL) conference, designed to provide female employees with the tools and support needed to grow into leadership roles.
“With an impressive 57% of attendees receiving promotions after attending the workshops, NFI’s commitment to developing women leaders is clear.”
The impact goes beyond promotions, as 92% of the women who attend these conferences remain with the company, demonstrating the effectiveness of the program in both career advancement and retention.
The “She Drives” Initiative
Recognizing the underrepresentation of women in transportation roles, NFI launched the "She Drives" initiative to address this gap and create a more inclusive environment for female drivers. The She Drives committee hosts events to connect with and support women drivers, as well as listening sessions where female employees are invited to share the challenges they face in their roles. This initiative not only empowers women to pursue careers in driving but also ensures their voices are heard, helping to shape a more supportive workplace. They are currently expanding this initiative to go beyond just empowering female drivers, but also female forklift operators at their distribution centers.
Holistic Health Support for Women
NFI’s commitment to the well-being of their female employees also extends further than professional development. They host mobile mammogram events, providing a convenient way for women to access vital health services. For many attendees, this may be their first-ever mammogram, showcasing NFI’s proactive approach to ensuring that women have access to critical healthcare resources.
Championing Diversity through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)
NFI’s commitment to diversity and inclusion includes fostering an inclusive workplace through a variety of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). NFI-sponsored ERGs provide platforms where employees can connect, share their experiences, and contribute to a more inclusive work environment.
“As our organization moves forward, we will continue to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion at every level and invite everyone to join us in this journey toward a better future.”
Examples of these groups include the Women’s Initiative Network (WIN), which supports the professional growth of women in the workplace, and the Young Professionals Network, which fosters career development for early-career employees. Other ERGs, such as the Hispanic Organization for Leadership Advancement and the Black Organization for Leadership and Development, focus on empowering employees from underrepresented communities through mentorship, networking, and leadership training.
By offering such a wide range of ERGs, NFI ensures that all employees feel represented, supported, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives to the company’s success.
