“This is not philanthropy, […] it’s rent for us living on the planet.”
- Yvon Chouinard, Founder of Patagonia and Co-founder of 1% for the Planet
Goodee is a proud member of 1% for the Planet. We’re excited to be part of a global network of inspiring companies who are coming together to give back to the Earth.
What is 1% for the Planet?
1% for the Planet is a global movement launched in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. Realizing they had a responsibility to protect the planet, the outdoor-loving entrepreneurs decided to give 1% of their sales back to the environment, whether or not they were profitable.
As they both recognized the power of collective action, they founded 1% for the Planet as a non-profit organization to encourage other businesses to do the same. When joining the movement, businesses also commit to donating 1% of their annual revenue to grassroots environmental nonprofits making a difference on the ground through monetary donations, volunteer time, in-kind donations, or other forms of approved promotional support.
Why is it important to us?
As a Certified B Corp working for social and environmental good, we were determined to deepen our commitment to a more sustainable future, so joining 1% for the Planet made perfect sense. By supporting 1%-for-the-Planet-approved nonprofit partners, we have a unique opportunity to build meaningful relations with grassroots organizations at the forefront of social and environmental justice, and have a greater impact.
What nonprofits do we support?
After reviewing 1% for the-Planet’s list of pre-vetted nonprofits, we’ve identified four environmental organizations with a specific focus on BIPOC communities that we want to support.
We will be donating 1% of our Fiscal Year 2021 proceeds to our nonprofit partners. And the best part is, as our business grows — with your support — so will our impact.
What does it mean for you?
As a conscious consumer, you can have peace of mind knowing that you’re taking action for our planet every time you make a purchase with us. We can’t make meaningful change alone, but together we can make a difference for the Earth*.

The Ron Finley Project
When L.A.-based fashion designer Ron Finley got tired of the lack of fresh produce in his neighborhood, he decided to grow a curbside edible garden in front of his South Central home — an act that city officials deemed illegal. The “Gangsta Gardener” fought back, got the law changed, and eventually launched a nonprofit to teach people how to turn unused spaces into community gardens.
Why we love The Ron Finley Project
The organization helps create a healthier and more sustainable local community by empowering residents to grow their own organic food, effectively bringing urban gardening not only to South L.A. but to the world. We’re thrilled to partner up with them for a second year running.

Environmental Youth Alliance
Operating on unceded Indigenous land belonging to the Coast Salish peoples, the Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA) is a BIPOC-run nonprofit that supports young people to connect with nature through hands-on programs and build the skills, experience, and resilience necessary to grow as leaders and environmental stewards in their communities.
Why we love Environmental Youth Alliance
EYA provides free, trauma-informed environmental education, covering a wide range of themes, from native plant gardening and Indigenous plant use to pollinator conservation. Working with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers, EYA empowers the next generation of BIPOC youth leaders while helping preserve ancestral knowledge.
"With donations from our community, we run paid land-based education and job skills training programs that equip youth with the skills and confidence to be environmental stewards. "

RAVEN Canada
RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs) raises legal defence funds for Indigenous Peoples across Canada to defend their rights and the integrity of their traditional lands and cultures. Working in collaboration with Indigenous communities, they have contributed to halting mines, stopping pipelines, and setting groundbreaking legal precedents. RAVEN also aims to educate the general public about what is at stake for communities and for the environment.
Why we love RAVEN Canada
By working against industrial projects that harm Indigenous communities, RAVEN champions systemic change. The organization helps to address environmental sustainability and climate change, and enshrine reconciliation into law.
"Contributions like this one empower our partner Nations to stand up for their rights and ensure healthy land, air and water are preserved for future generations. Thanks to Goodee, RAVEN is able to provide access to the justice system for Indigenous Nations who are taking to the courts to protect the environment and defend their traditional territories."
